My Story
Hello, I am April Williamson, I am a licensed therapist in Blaine MN.
Prior to becoming a therapist, I began my career as an art teacher. I quickly realized that what I enjoyed most was talking with my students, rather than teaching art techniques. Many of the kids I worked with seemed to need someone who would listen and take them seriously more than they needed instruction in art. This realization led me to pursue a path in therapy, learning how I could support children and their families in strengthening their relationships and nurturing their mental health.
I think mental health is deeply connected to resilience. Life throws things at us, sometimes way too early, and sometimes when we least expect it. Some people learn how to cope as kids. Others are learning those skills as adults—and honestly, that can feel harder. In therapy, I help people build on what they’re already good at, notice the things that need a little work, and make changes that feel manageable and meaningful. Sometimes it’s a big shift, but often it’s just one small step at a time. I became a therapist because I know how powerful it can be to have someone in your corner when you’re trying to move forward or just get through the day.
Clients have described me as warm, gently honest, funny, and someone they feel comfortable with. I try to show up as my real self in therapy—not as someone with all the answers, but as a person who’s willing to sit with you, listen closely, and help you figure things out. In my own life, I’ve found comfort in things like journaling, crocheting, listening to music, and taking long drives down quiet country roads. Driving at night is my favorite—there’s something peaceful about the stillness when the world slows down.
Just as I encourage clients to explore and grow in therapy, I approach life with curiosity and a passion for discovery. I pride myself on being a lifelong learner. I’m always curious about the world—seeking out new places to explore, crafts to try, music to hear, podcasts to listen to, books to read, and movies to enjoy. I am passionate about life and always looking for what more it has to offer.
By nature, I am an optimist, and I believe it’s important for clients to know that when they walk into my office, I immediately hold hope that their situation can improve. Sometimes clients come in feeling hopeless, and in those moments, I carry the hope until they are ready to embrace it themselves.
In therapy, I wear many hats—educator, listener, cheerleader, mirror—always adapting to what each client needs in the moment.
In my spare time, I am busy going to the park with my son, creating art, and baking.
“You find your home, and it may not be what you thought – you know; color’s off, style’s wrong… but there it is anyway and to hell with you if you can’t take a joke.” – Susan Surandon,
Moonlight Mile (2002).
I love this quote because, in my experience, life rarely turns out the way we planned — whether it’s the job we imagined, the person we thought we’d marry, or even the version of ourselves we pictured when we were ten. That doesn’t mean life can’t still be beautiful.
So much of therapy — and life — is about learning to find comfort in places we didn’t expect. Sometimes healing looks different than we imagined. Sometimes it’s slower, messier, or even funnier than we thought. But with a little honesty and a little humor, we often end up exactly where we’re meant to be.
